My Favorite Modeling Paste

I've tried many modeling pastes over the years, but Saracino has become my favorite. It gives me the perfect balance of softness, strength, and working time for creating realistic figures.

Saracino Pasta Model

Modeling Sugar Paste

I've tried many modeling pastes over the years, and this is the one I always come back to. It's easy to shape, has the perfect working time, and doesn't dry too quickly or too slowly. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced sculptor, it's an excellent choice for creating realistic figures.

Eyeball Scale

Pajico Color Scale

Originally designed for measuring clay colors, but I use it in a different way. It's perfect for measuring equal amounts of modeling paste, especially when making eyes. It helps me keep both eyes the same size, making my figures look more balanced and consistent.

Art Knife

Olfa Art Knife

I've been using this art knife for many years. The blade is sturdy, sharp, and perfect for precise cutting. The handle is comfortable to hold, and I especially like that it can be taken apart for easy cleaning. It's one of the tools I always keep on my workbench.

Another Modeling Tool set

Different shape of tools

Most modeling tool sets include around seven different tools, but the one I reach for most often is the thin, flat-ended tool.

Like the Dresden tool, it's perfect for refining small details and shaping delicate areas of your figures.

I've linked a similar set since the exact one I use is difficult to find.

Food Gel Colors

Artisan Accents

I mainly use these highly concentrated gel colors when mixing custom modeling paste colors.

Because they're so concentrated, even a tiny amount produces vibrant color, while still allowing you to create soft pastel shades when needed.

The same company also makes Chameleon Oil Colors, which are perfect for coloring chocolate, cocoa butter, and buttercream.

Sprinkle Pen

Sweet Elizabeth

This handy little tool picks up tiny sprinkles, pearls, and other small decorations one at a time, making detailed cake decorating much easier.

It's a simple tool that saves a surprising amount of time.

Pasta Bouquet

Saracino Flower Gum

Perfect for sugar flowers and delicate details. I use it for eyes, teeth, thin fabric, and other fine elements that require extra strength while still remaining easy to work with.

Craft Mat

Olfa Cutter Mat

I've been using Olfa cutting mats for many years. They're durable, provide a great surface for modeling paste, and make it easy to lift your work without sticking. They're also perfect for cutting with precision. This size has centimeter measurements,

Larger sizes are also available with  inch markings.

Sharp Tip Brush

Tamiya  Painted Brush

Although it's designed for plastic model painting, I use it for painting the tiny details on my figures. It's especially great for painting eyes, facial features, and other fine details that require precision.

Modeling Tool

Dresden Tool

The rounded, oval-shaped tip feels almost like an extension of your fingertip, making it one of the most versatile tools for figure modeling.

Whether you're smoothing, pressing, shaping, or adding subtle details, simply changing the angle of the tool allows you to create exactly the effect you're looking for.

This tool was originally made by Wilton, but that version is no longer available. The one I use has a slightly different shape, so I've linked a similar alternative. In my experience, once you get comfortable with a modeling tool, almost any version becomes easy to use.

Knit Texture Silicone Mat

Katy Sue Design

Katy Sue Designs makes many beautiful texture mats, but this knit pattern is by far my favorite.

It's surprisingly versatile and works beautifully for sweaters, scarves, blankets, hats, and many other textured details. It's one of those tools you'll find yourself reaching for again and again.
